What if money was no object?
As Alan Watts says in his speech, we shouldn’t care about money as it is preventing us from doing what we really love. Instead, how would we really enjoy spending our life if money didn’t exist? The first time I thought about it, I started to fall in a deep and long daydream. How can we possibly live without money? I mean, I guess we could, if all the economies in the world would become a communist system and trade would replace money. As per Karl Marx, a communist system would thus free individuals from alienation in the sense of having one’s life structured around survival (making a wage or salary in a capitalist system), which results of a transition from the “realm of necessity” to the “realm of freedom.” And the “true richness” to be the amount of time one has at his disposal to pursue one’s creative passions. I really love this idea and actually, it does already exist. If you consider some Karma yoga programs, Ashrams and other meditation centers such as Vipassana, it is usually based on donations. You will not spend any money for food and accommodation and you will participate in the collective activities such as cooking/cleaning with an opportunity to discover (hopefully) what you are looking for. For sure, it won’t be a 5* hotel standard with the nice buffet for breakfast. However, do we really need all we have ? We live in a world of luxury without even noticing it. If you ask me what I will do if money wasn’t an object, I actually wouldn’t change much for my future aspirations : having my yoga retreat center where people can come to practice yoga, eat healthy, fresh food and find some calm and peace throughout their stay. Obviously, no fees attached to it. If money wasn’t an object, people would be much more conscious about what they really want to be, what they really want to have and what they really want to do. I believe that lots of people are stuck in a job that they hate but they still have to do it, because of family commitments, bills and rent to pay, or maybe buying unnecessary material luxuries. But what if money just disappeared, what everyone would do? For sure, the world will be very different. Would people be happier? More creative? More supportive with each other? More caring?…
Good post. I learn something new and challenging on sites I stumbleupon everyday. Its always interesting to read articles from other authors and practice something from other sites.
